So your electric oven isn’t working properly. First of all, don’t panic. No appliance will last forever, but it’s likely that an oven repair is all that’s needed, and you won’t have to fork out for a brand new one (unless, of course, you were considering it anyway, in which case check out our range of cookers).
Most common electric oven faults can be easily repaired. Just be sure to contact an experienced, fully-qualified engineer who’ll be able to safely carry out oven and other domestic appliance repairs within your budget.
It can be useful to have an idea of what might be behind the problem, though. So, let’s have a look at some of the most common issues with electric ovens.
1. “My electric oven won’t turn on”
Once you’ve double-checked the oven is plugged in at the mains and that a fuse hasn’t blown, it’s time to call out an engineer.
The problem could be with your cooker’s terminal block, through which the electrical supply actually reaches the oven. This is a fairly straightforward repair, but should always be done by an expert.
2. “The oven is on but won’t heat up”
This could be down to several things, but a common issue is with the heating elements. These are the metal parts inside an electric oven that produce the actual heat.
Oven elements are subject to wear and tear over time, so if you’ve had your electric oven for a while, don’t be surprised if professional repairs are needed, and a faulty element needs replacing.
3. “My oven heats up then cuts out”
You could have a faulty thermostat. The thermostat measures the heat inside your oven, and switches the elements on and off to reach and maintain the desired temperature.
Replacing a thermostat is reasonably simple, but should be done by a qualified technician.
4. “My oven is making a lot of noise”
A noisy electric oven can be alarming. If it is fan-assisted, the fan could be worn out or broken. The fan works to move the air heated by the elements around the interior, and runs from an electric motor.
A faulty motor or fan can cause excess noise, no noise at all, or you might notice that your food isn’t cooking evenly, which can mean the fan isn’t distributing heat properly around the oven. Get in touch with a technician to diagnose and repair a faulty fan.
5. “The oven is taking ages to heat up”
Many things can cause your oven to take longer than normal to heat up. But one common cause is the rubber seal around the door being worn away, broken – or missing altogether.
If there is a problem with the seal, the oven will take longer to warm up because heat is escaping around the edges of the door. Not only is this inconvenient, but it’s a waste of energy too. Call in a professional to replace the seal properly, so the problem won’t reoccur.
