Category: Energy Bills
We’re all trying to save money on our household bills at the moment. But do you know which of your appliances is costing you the most?
To save money on your energy bill, work out where your hard-earned money is actually going, then take action to reduce your energy usage in the areas that will make the biggest difference.
Energy usage is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), so which of your household appliances consumes the most, and therefore costs the most to run?
Tumble dryers
Top of the list is the tumble dryer, which can guzzle 4.5kWh in a single cycle. You can avoid wasting energy by waiting until you have a full load, but an even better way to slash the costs is to invest in a heat pump tumble dryer.
A heat pump tumble dryer operates at lower temperatures and uses less than half the energy per cycle compared to a traditional condenser or vented machine. It could save you hundreds of pounds per year.
Electric ovens
Expect your electric oven to gobble up around 2kWh per 30 minutes of use. But there are ways to reduce energy usage – without missing out on home-cooked meals.
Make clever use of the space inside your oven to cook multiple dishes at once. Double check the optimum oven temperature for your dish so you’re not setting it higher than needed – and have your food ready to pop in as soon as your oven gets up to temperature.
Washing machines
Washing machines vary enormously in energy usage, with their age a major factor. On average, a 1400 spin washing machine will use 1.4kWh an hour.
Lowering the temperature will reduce the machine’s energy consumption, as it takes less energy to heat the water. Make sure you wash in full loads – it takes less energy to run one full load than two half loads, and it will help your machine last longer, too.
Dishwashers
Dishwashers are pleasingly low on energy usage compared to other large appliances. But they still typically use 1.2-1.5kWh per load, so it’s wise to keep this as low as possible.
Stack your dishes correctly and always run a full load. And opt for the eco cycle on your machine. If your dishwasher doesn’t have one, consider investing in a new one that’s more energy efficient.
Fridge-freezers
Energy usage will vary across models, but your trusty fridge-freezer is among the major energy guzzlers in your home, because they need to run around the clock.
Buying an energy-efficient fridge-freezer is the most effective way to reduce running costs, but you can take action to avoid yours having to work harder than necessary.
Position it away from heat sources and leave 5cm of space around it, so it can release heat. Avoid leaving the door open, and wait for food to cool before putting it in the fridge.
